What Is Data Center Equipment Worth?
There is no price list, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. But the variables are knowable, and understanding them is the difference between a fair number and a number you should refuse.
and load
leaves
and DC

The three variables that decide everything
Condition and completeness. This dominates. A modular UPS with its power modules installed is worth multiples of the same frame with the modules pulled. A switchgear lineup with its drawout breakers present is a resalable assembly; the same lineup emptied for spares is sheet metal and copper. Missing drive caddies, missing rails, missing side panels, drained systems and cannibalized controls all cut value more than the removed parts are worth.
Generation and obsolescence. IT hardware falls fastest — server platforms lose most of their resale premium within two to three generations. Chillers using phased-out refrigerants lose access to the retrofit market. Switchgear with obsolete protective relays loses the buyers who wanted the relays. Transformers age most gracefully of anything in the room.
Demand and documentation. Equipment that many buyers want prices above equipment only one specialist wants, which is why common frames and standard voltages beat exotic configurations. And documentation is close to free money: load bank results, service history, runtime hours and refrigerant records all raise a number because they remove the buyer's risk.
By category
UPS Systems
10 kVA – 2.5 MVA modules
Batteries are the part most sellers dread. We remove VRLA strings and lithium cabinets ourselves, palletize them to DOT requirements, and route them to a licensed recycler. You get the recycling documentation with your paperwork. Nothing gets left in your battery room for someone else to deal with.
PDUs
50 kVA – 1000 kVA floor units
Isolation and step-down transformers, output panels, and the under-floor whips that feed the cabinets get bought alongside the distribution gear. Copper whip runs are usually the quiet surprise in a decommissioning — there is more of it under the floor than anyone expects.
Busway
225 A – 5000 A runs
Busway removal is overhead work on lifts, in an occupied ceiling shared with tray, sprinkler and fiber. Our crews de-energize, verify absence of voltage, unbolt the joint packs, and lower sections in order. Cable tray and ceiling grid go back the way we found them.
Switchgear
480 V – 38 kV lineups
Drawout air circuit breakers, molded case breakers, vacuum breakers and your spares shelf all get bought. Facilities routinely hold a cabinet of spare breakers matched to a lineup being retired — that shelf often carries more value than the seller expects.
Generators
100 kW – 3 MW standby sets
We handle crane picks, roof and courtyard extractions, fuel pump-down and disposal, tank cleaning, and coordination with your fire marshal on permitted removals. Concrete pads and anchor bolts get cut flush and the pad left clean if that is what you need.
Chillers
50 – 2000 ton capacity
Certified recovery of refrigerant before any line is cut, glycol drain-down and disposal, and cap-off of chilled water piping at the points you specify. You receive the recovery documentation. Roof penetrations get patched, curbs left sound.
Servers
Single racks – full halls
Processor generation, memory configuration and drive population determine whether a fleet is resale hardware or parts. Current and prior-generation servers with populated memory price as working equipment. Older kit prices on board yield, heatsinks and chassis metal. We tell you which bucket your fleet is in before we quote, not after.
Data Center Infrastructure
Cabinets, tray, containment, floor
Fiber trunks, cassettes, patch panels and enclosures, environmental monitoring sensors, branch circuit monitoring, leak detection, and the DCIM hardware appliances. We buy it as part of the room rather than making you find a separate buyer for each layer.
Resale versus scrap
A scrap yard quotes per pound because material weight is their entire business model. That is a legitimate business, and for genuinely dead equipment it is the right answer. The problem is that it is also the answer they give for equipment that would resell into service at several times material value.
The categories most often mispriced as scrap are transformers, switchgear and breakers, UPS equipment with modules intact, recent gensets, and current-generation servers. If someone has quoted your electrical room by the pound, it costs nothing to have us look at the list before you accept.
We are equally direct in the other direction. Where equipment genuinely has no resale path, we say so and price recovery value, rather than inflating expectations and renegotiating later.
