Who Buys Data Center Equipment?

Four kinds of company will answer your call, and they are not interchangeable. Knowing which one you are talking to explains the number they quoted and whether it will survive contact with the actual room.

The question is not who will quote you, but who can fund and perform.
01

The four types

Type 01

Direct buyers

Fund the purchase themselves, take title, and usually perform or control the removal. Offers hold because there is no hidden third party to satisfy. This is what we are.

Highest certainty
Type 02

Brokers

Match your equipment to buyers they know and keep a spread. Useful reach, but the number is provisional until their buyer sees the room, and removal is subcontracted.

Provisional pricing
Type 03

ITAD firms

Focused on IT hardware and data compliance. Strong on reporting; usually fee-plus-revenue-share rather than outright purchase, and rarely equipped for power and cooling plant.

IT only
Type 04

Scrap processors

Buy by the pound on material content. Correct for genuinely dead equipment, and a significant loss for anything that would resell into service.

Material value only
02

Questions that reveal which one you have

Ask who funds the purchase. A direct buyer answers immediately; a broker describes a process. Ask whose crews perform the removal and whose insurance certificate you will receive. Ask when payment happens — on the dock, or after resale. Ask whether the offer is itemized and whether it is subject to inspection.

None of these questions are hostile, and a legitimate company in any of the four categories will answer them plainly. The answers tell you whether the number in front of you is a commitment or an opening position.

03

What we do

We are a direct buyer that also performs the decommissioning, which is a deliberately narrow combination. We fund the purchase, our crews do the work, we carry the insurance, we destroy the drives, we haul the freight, and we pay before the trailer leaves your dock.

01

We do the decommissioning

Our crews rack out the hardware, de-energize and pull the electrical distribution, recover refrigerant, drain glycol, cut and cap piping, and break down containment and cabinets. You are not hiring a broker who then hires a rigger who then hires a hauler. One company, one point of contact, one insurance certificate.

02

We do the loading

Rigging, lift and crane work, dock plates, pallets, stretch wrap, load bars, straps and the trucks themselves are ours. Overhead busway comes down on lifts. Generators and chillers go out on cranes. Servers leave palletized and manifested. Nothing about the load-out becomes your problem.

03

Payment before the truck leaves

You are paid in full before equipment leaves your dock — wire, company check or cashier's check, your choice. No consignment, no percentage of eventual resale, no invoice you have to chase. The racks stay where they are until the money has landed.

04

Drive destruction, documented

Every data-bearing device is degaussed and physically destroyed, on your floor if you prefer. You receive a certificate of destruction listing serial numbers and a chain-of-custody record signed at each handoff, formatted so your audit team can reconcile it against your asset register.

05

The room is left clean

Floor tiles reset, penetrations patched, abandoned cable removed, debris hauled, and the space swept. Where a landlord or lease requires a specific restoration standard, we work to it and document the result with photographs before and after.

06

Written offers that hold

Quotes are written, itemized by category, and hold for thirty days. If your process needs a formal bid document, a W-9, a certificate of insurance naming your entity, or a purchase order reference on the offer, say so and it is on the paperwork.

04

What we buy

Three-phase, modular and monolithic

UPS Systems

We buy three-phase uninterruptible power supplies out of live and decommissioned white space: modular frames, monolithic units, matching battery cabinets and the static switches that go with them.

10 kVA – 2.5 MVA modules
Floor-mount, RPP and rack PDUs

PDUs

Floor-mount PDUs with integral transformers, remote power panels, and metered or switched rack PDUs by the pallet — we buy all three tiers of distribution.

50 kVA – 1000 kVA floor units
Overhead track, tap boxes, elbows

Busway

Overhead busway is the most reusable thing in a white space and the most commonly thrown away. We buy full runs, tap-off boxes, elbows and end feeds.

225 A – 5000 A runs
LV and MV, ATS, breakers

Switchgear

Low-voltage lineups, medium-voltage metal-clad gear, automatic transfer switches and loose breakers — bought as complete lineups or section by section.

480 V – 38 kV lineups
Diesel and gas, enclosed or open

Generators

Standby diesel and natural gas generator sets, sub-base and belly tanks, paralleling gear and radiator packages — running or not.

100 kW – 3 MW standby sets
Air-cooled, water-cooled, CRAH/CRAC

Chillers

Air-cooled and water-cooled chillers, cooling towers, CRAC and CRAH units, pumps and dry coolers — the whole mechanical plant.

50 – 2000 ton capacity
Compute, storage, network, GPU

Servers

Rackmount compute, storage arrays, network gear and GPU nodes — bought by the rack or by the hall, with documented data destruction.

Single racks – full halls
Everything the equipment sits in

Data Center Infrastructure

Cabinets, containment, cable tray, raised floor, fiber and copper plant — the structure everything else was mounted in.

Frequently asked questions

Should I get multiple quotes?
Yes, and compare scope rather than headline numbers. A higher offer that excludes removal, drive destruction and freight is frequently worth less than a lower all-in number.
Why would a broker quote higher than a direct buyer?
Because a provisional number costs them nothing until it is tested. Ask whether the quote is subject to inspection and who performs the removal, and the comparison usually resolves itself.
Is a scrap yard ever the right answer?
Yes, for equipment with no resale path — badly damaged, obsolete or already stripped. The mistake is applying that pricing to an entire electrical room without checking.
Do you buy what other buyers decline?
Frequently. Containment, floor tile, cable tray, batteries and mixed remainders are the parts other vendors leave behind, and leaving them behind is how a decommissioning stalls.
Can you work alongside our existing ITAD vendor?
Yes. A common split is your ITAD partner keeping the servers under an existing contract while we buy and remove the power and cooling plant they are not equipped for.
