Hard Drive Destruction

Three methods, one standard of documentation. Wipe to NIST 800-88 purge, degauss, or physically shred — on site if your policy requires it — with every serial recorded and reconciled against the asset list you gave us.

01

Choosing a method

NIST 800-88 purge-level overwriting leaves the drive functional, which preserves resale value and therefore improves your offer. It is appropriate for the large majority of enterprise data and is verifiable per drive.

Degaussing destroys magnetic domains and renders spinning media permanently unreadable. It is fast and irreversible, and the drive is scrap afterwards. It is meaningless for solid-state media, which we handle by cryptographic erase or shredding.

Physical shredding is the most defensible option and the one auditors like best. It can be performed at your facility, witnessed by your security team, with certificates issued before the truck leaves the property.

02

Chain of custody

Drives are separated at de-rack, recorded by serial, sealed into tracked containers, and moved under documented custody. Nothing is aggregated into an untracked bin. The closeout report matches each destroyed serial to the asset it came from, which is what makes it usable evidence rather than a generic letter.

03

Regulated environments

HIPAA, PCI DSS, FERPA, SOX, GLBA, CJIS and federal workloads all impose different documentation and handling expectations. Tell us the framework at the quote stage and we adjust scope — on-site-only destruction, escorted crews, background-checked personnel, restricted hours, witness sign-off — so the output satisfies your auditor.

Frequently asked questions

Can you shred on site?
Yes. Mobile shredding at your facility with your personnel witnessing, certificates issued before departure.
Is wiping as safe as shredding?
NIST 800-88 purge-level wiping is accepted for most enterprise data and is verifiable per drive. Where policy or regulation demands physical destruction, shred. We will not tell you a wipe satisfies a requirement it does not.
What happens to SSDs?
Cryptographic erase or physical shredding. Degaussing has no effect on flash memory, and any vendor offering it for SSDs is selling you a placebo.
Do certificates list every serial?
Yes, every drive by serial with the method applied, reconciled against the asset list you provided.
Does destruction reduce what you pay us?
Shredding and degaussing eliminate drive resale value, so those options reduce the drive line slightly. Wiping preserves it. We show both numbers so you can weigh the tradeoff yourself.
